This is CBS High on the World, I'm John Bachelor, the South Caucasus,

Azerbaijan and Armenia, adversaries since the end of the Soviet state.

The battle over territory that is Azerbaijani by the claims of Baku and by the concession

of Yerevan, the Prime Minister of Armenia, acknowledging that Nagorno-Karabakh is Azerbaijan.

Territory, however, that is not resolved the conflict that led to an armed conflict

in late 2020. I visited Azerbaijan after that conflict, saw the remnants of the

missile exchanges, saw the anxiety of the former Nagorno-Karabakh farmers who wanted to go

back to their land, and yet they had to wait because of landmines, because of ongoing conflict

risks when you enter into a former battle zone. However, since then, things have not turned out

peacefully, and I welcome Ekaterina Zalotava, writing for geopolitical futures, she's in Moscow.

And we need to look at this map, which is complicated by the fact that South Caucasus is up and

down, and there are passageways that are everybody has to use, and there are impassable parts

of the up and down landscape. So we look at the major players as of 2020 through 2023.

A Russian Federation guaranteeing peacekeepers between the two adversaries until and

if a peace treaty is signed, and there's resolution of these different pieces in conflict.
