Entering into a contest that has gone on for many decades, perhaps centuries, between conservatives and

conservatives. I welcome Peter Berkowitz of the Hoover Institution writing at

Real Clear Politics bringing us up to date on the revelation that the

conservatism of my youth is now out of date according to some conservatives of my seniority. I'm hearing these terms from Peter.

Peter, a very good evening to you. The new right is National Conservatism.

The former new right is national conservatism conservatism.

The former new right is American conservatism.

Have I got that right so far?

So far.

So far, so good when these great figures first William Buckley generation later Reagan

emerges as quite a generation later governor of California and then president of the United States.

Well originally the Buckley movement was indeed referred

to as the new right. And now we have an upstart movement that thinks of itself as the new right and wants to replace the old new right.

If I understand the old new right, this becomes sort of like you need a scorecard. It was a combination of what you've called fusionism of

libertarian thinking and what you could say was traditional, you call it traditionalism, I would say it's just common sense, but that's me.

Emphasizing the family, emphasizing success, emphasizing transparency.

And those two were adversaries.

How so, Peter?

Well the libertarians and now we're going back to the 1950s, even before Buckley consolidates matters with the launch of National Review.
