Nuclear Armageddon. A topic that the 20th century featured again and again until the end

of the Soviet Union. The presumption was the US had survived all of the threats and was

now the one stop for deterring nuclear weapons in the rogue states. That was then. This is

now a welcome Henry Sikolsky, the non-proliferation policy education center, to help me comment

on a new document just made available in the spring of 2023 entitled, and this is the problem.

China's emergence as a second nuclear peer, implications for US nuclear deterrent strategy

this is a report from a study group convened by the Center for Global Security Research at the

Lawrence Livermore National Lab. Henry, a very good evening to you. A two-peer problem. What is that?

What does it mean for this document? Good evening to you. Good evening. What it means is we have to

worry not just about Russia as we did during the Cold War years from 45 through 89. We now have to

worry about China as well and possibly China and Russia working together against us in future

crises or God forbid wars. That is not anything that we've dealt with for quite a long time.

I think the previous period where we had to worry about this was in the 30s when we had to worry

about Japan and the access powers, essentially Nazi Germany. So we're going backwards with

regard to stability, I suppose. A two-peer problem with a twist. Russia has made it very clear that

nuclear weapons are on the minds of those who were in the Kremlin in control of the Ukraine war.

Vladimir Putin repeatedly mentions nuclear weapons either the Satan II strategic ballistic

missile with a nuclear warhead that has been tested or so-called tactical nukes deployed or

not deployed near the front of NATO. China, on the other hand, has made it very clear that it is

building a force that may be right now, feeling more ICBMs with warheads than the United States have

and at the same time allowing the U.S. to see the number of silos being constructed in north-western
