Hoover institution writing most recently at real clear politics about our time and the

idea of liberalism under duress under attack discarded out of date all of these things can be used as criticism of

liberalism. Peter is here in his essay not only to remark upon these debates but also to reflect upon a book that was

published last year. Liberalism against itself, Cold War intellectuals in the

making of our times by a distinguished professor of law at Yale

University, Samuel Mowing.

Peter, a very good day to you, you are traveling, you are in the United Kingdom you are headed to give a

presentation at Oxford University entitled Freedom Democracy and the US

Declaration of Independence strikes me as wonderful for us to discuss all of those things

simultaneously with the idea of liberalism having failed, liberalism against itself.

Good evening, John. Well to me liberalism has many meanings. The most familiar meaning of course in American politics is the left wing of the

Democratic Party.

But there's an older meaning.

I think of it more as the modern tradition of freedom.

Some people think of it as classical liberalism.

But I think of it, this modern tradition of freedom is the tradition that gave birth to the United States of America

to the principles inscribed in the declaration to the charter of government the Constitution
