Migration. The global south is migrating. We're told generally, but what does it mean locally?

I welcome Gwen Hogan of the city, a reporter covering Brooklyn, but really all of New York

is now part of the story of a global south migrating to the north. In terms of migration,

people seeking asylum in the United States of America, in addition to the homeless population

of all the large cities, looking now at a piece that Gwen filed at the end of July, Roosevelt

Hotel, a very famous landmark, off times the headquarters of the election, the presidential

election I remember FDR had had quoted there, I think in the 36 election. But in any event,

it became momentarily in July, the ground zero of what is to be done about the migrant

population and Gwen filed a story that was heartbreaking, but at the same time revelatory,

because many of the questions in Gwen's original story have been answered. Gwen, congratulations

and good evening. I meet you through your correspondence. The day you filed on the Roosevelt

Hotel that very warm weekend with what felt like hundreds of the whole world gathered outside.

What was I reading about? What was happening at the Roosevelt Hotel that made it so stark

about the city being overwhelmed momentarily? Good evening to you, Gwen.

Good evening and thanks for having me, John. Yeah, back in July, let me just back up a

little bit more. I would say asylum seekers and migrants crossing the southern border have

been traveling to New York for about a year now. You know, some have been put on buses

and from Texas. Most people are choosing to come here. They've heard about different

cities and they hear about New York through their WhatsApp networks and friends of friends

who've already migrated and they end up in New York City and New York City has been sort

of rapidly refuffling its shelter population for the past year and finding, standing up
