This is CBS I'm the world. I'm John Bachelors. 2015 Baghdad Iraq, Eli Lake. Eli Lake is a

columnist at the New York Sun. He is a contributing editor of commentary magazine. Most importantly,

he's a podcaster at the re-education of Eli Lake. He's about to take us in memory lane. Once

about a time Iraq dominated the news in the early part of the 20th century. And now,

is it the same country? Is it better? Is it worse? What have we learned? Eli, when you arrived

2015, the last time you were there, what did you see? What were the challenges? Good evening to you.

Thanks so much for having me. It's great to be back, John. When I was in Iraq in 2015, it was in

what I would call the height of the Second Terror War, the first one being the insurgency

that really gets going in the first year after the fall of Saddam Hussein. And then it's

well by the counterinsurgency led by David Patras. And so by the end of George W. Bush's term,

Iraq is on a very good path. Then Barack Obama pulls the troops out at the end of 2011.

And it takes only a couple years for the emergence of ISIS. And ISIS emerges in part because the

and Bari tribesmen who align themselves with the US military and coalition forces against al Qaeda

were persecuted by the Shia Prime Minister Norya Maliki. So what we have in 2015 is that the

second largest city in Iraq Mosul is controlled by the Islamic State. It is declared that they have

created a caliphate between the territory of Syria and Iraq that they now control. They're
