Gaza crisis.

I go to Richard Goldberg of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracy,

publishing what must not happen following the success of the IDF in Gaza to defeat Hamas was what must not happen afterwards.

Rich, a very good evening to you.

We have five to get through and the first is very important. What is the future for Hamas afterwards? What? Good evening to you.

Good evening, John. Well, thanks for having me. And, you know, the premise for all of this is everyone's asking this question of what comes next in Gaza? What comes next? That's what everybody's asking Israel, asking United States, asking Arab countries, what comes next?

And it's almost like a bunch of foreign policy hacks

sitting around a table, staring at a blank canvas

and thinking, whoa, we can paint whatever we want right now, it's a very dangerous dynamic, right?

That usually fails. And so the purpose of my piece was to say, let's start with a different

question and that is what cannot come next? Let's have the kids

instead of just painting whatever they want on a blank canvas have some lines that

they have to draw within to prevent total policy failure.

And so the first one you're raising, John, here,

is that Hamas needs to be destroyed.

It has to be gone.

It can't just be, well, they're no longer in power but they have elements still in

Gaza and they have a stronghold here but they won't rule Gaza. No they need to be

rooted out. Now that's not to say that you can get every ideological supporter of Hamas out of Gaza.

Not going to happen.
