This is the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Berlin, looking at the recent French elections, the recent English

British elections, and what this portends for the EU and NATO. Those are not the

same organizations so there is heavy overlap.

Judy, a very good day to you in Berlin.

Your measure of the French elections was a question to your colleagues from all across the European Union and the answers are instructive.

You ask does the French vote weaken Europe or begin at the beginning with Stephanie Baps, who is

former NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General, in other words looking at

this from the point of view of security. And Ms Babs reminds us that Emmanuel McCrone who called

this special election made a statement recently that Europe is mortal.

Europe is mortal.

Stephanie Babs, who knows France and NATO inside out, was actually referring to an interview that Macron gave and the speech he gave

several weeks ago actually saying that Europe is in danger.

You cannot take it for granted, it could even die, and we've got to defend its democracy, its values, and keep together.

And he made this speech way before his surprise announcement of holding elections to the National Assembly.
