In this episode, we have a conversation with my friend Chad, who is deaf.

0:57.0

We have this conversation through video chat, and when we finished, I was just chatting with Chad and talking about how important it is for interpreters to be faithful to the words that are expressed by the person they're interpreting for.

1:06.0

So we went back and reviewed the video chat and tried to make sure that we were getting all the words right.

1:15.6

So what you're going to hear in this podcast is not the original audio, but an interpretation from the sign language in the video where we had that conversation. Now this may get a little confusing at times

1:31.4

because I'm going to be acting as the interpreter for Chad so when you hear my voice most of the

1:36.2

time it's going to be speaking for Chad. Occasionally I will interject. I'll participate as myself. When that happens, I'll give you a signal

1:47.2

and just say interpreter speaking. That way you know you're hearing my voice speaking on behalf of

1:51.8

myself. Otherwise, when I don't say interpreter speaking, you can assume that what I'm saying

1:58.2

is Chad's words. So if this episode feels a little bit frustrating at times, having to rely on the interpreter,

2:06.4

instead of getting the words directly as they were originally expressed,

2:10.6

we want you to remember that deaf people experience that all the time.

2:14.8

When they're trying to navigate a world that is designed for hearing people,

2:19.3

we were actually kind of excited that this episode turned out the way it did because we wanted

2:24.5

to give you a little tiny glimpse into what it might be like to experience everything that's

2:31.9

expressed around you through a filter.

2:36.9

So the audio is not going to match up with anything that you see on the screen.
