Tori Meister kind of bubbled into my awareness in the mid to late 2000s at a time when there was a lot of up-and-coming hot kind of teenage surfers doing massive airs on small waves but what stood out for Tori was just his versatility

I'd see I think he did a couple of video submission contests like Intersection,

and there was clips of him just charging huge waves at Backdoor.

And then the airs that he was doing were these really contorted, whipping, improvised airs that just looked unique and interesting.

And in the economic downturn in 2008, Tori lost his main sponsor.

But what impressed me most was that he began documenting his travels and his

road, his career path through a blog called Alter Ego.

And so he'd post video clips of him on the road around the world sponsorless, meaning he was doing it on his own dime.

And that's where I really developed a lot of respect for Tori because in those years, without the sponsor, was when he was doing his greatest surfing and improving his

craft and so I admired that I was really gratified to see that when O'Neill did their

Coldwater a classic event in 2013 where they offered first prize winner a sponsorship contract

that Tori was able to win that event and get the

backing that he deserves for the talent that he possesses. So it's been a real rising from the

Ashes story for Tori, but he's at a wild ride, and that's why I wanted to get his unique

and inside perspective. On all the things that we

really discuss just specatively in this show normally. Tori's lived it and that's why I wanted

to have him on today's show. So in our conversation, Tori tells us what it's like spending a year on the road attempting

to qualify for the world tour.
