Summary

What role did the Bible play in the development of British North America and the early United States? 0:37.6	Not long before John Winthrop and his Puritan followers landed in Massachusetts, he gave a lay sermon called a model of Christian charity.
0:45.8	In this lay sermon, Winthrop reminded his followers that they would soon land in America
0:50.4	to fulfill a very important task.
0:53.0	Inspired by the Bible's book of Matthew, verse 514,
0:56.0	Winthrop informed his followers,
0:59.0	quote, We shall find that the God of Israel is among us,
1:02.0	when 10 of us shall be able to resist a thousand of our enemies,
1:06.0	when he shall make us a praise and glory, that men shall say of succeeding plantations,
1:11.0	the Lord make it like that of New England.
1:13.4	For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill.
1:17.5	The eyes of all people are upon us, so that if we shall deal falsely with our
