Alex Hutchinson is a journalist, athlete and author of "Endure: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance".
What makes some of us quit while others can continue? Just how much of human performance is dictated by the mind and how much by the body? These are fundamental questions which all of us have contemplated, today we find the answers.
Alex takes us through the fascinating research that went into his book. I was blown away by the insights as he breaks down the components that make up "endurance" and gives us some fantastic tools to improve our own.

0:26.6 | elastic limits of human performance. I think anyone who has ever gone for a run has thought |
0:33.4 | to themselves what makes some of us quit while others continue, and just how much of human |
0:38.5 | performance is dictated by the mind and how much by the body. It's a fundamental question |
0:43.6 | which anyone who has ever taken part in a physical pursuit has considered. And today, Alex |
0:50.3 | is going to take us through exactly what he's uncovered. I'm absolutely certain that |
0:56.2 | this is going to be a massive benefit to a lot of listeners. If it is to you, please |
1:01.4 | pop it into your gym, Facebook group, or send it to some friends that you know would really |
1:07.8 | appreciate the insights that Alex gives us. This could genuinely be a game changer for a lot |
1:13.2 | of athletes performances as we move into 2019. So pound the share button if you would be |
1:18.8 | so kind. Don't forget to hit subscribe if you are new to the channel. It would make me |
1:23.0 | very happy indeed. And if you're a regular listener, please go and give me five stars, |
1:28.8 | wherever you are tuned in. Now let's go and improve our endurance. |
1:49.3 | Alex, welcome to Modern Wisdom. How are you? |
1:52.0 | I'm good. Thanks, Chris, for having me on. I appreciate it. Brilliant. So I'm specifically excited |
1:59.7 | about today's podcast, not least because my endurance sucks. So I am hoping, as I'm sure many |
2:06.5 | of the listeners are, to find some strategies that can improve our endurance. And also, I think |
2:12.9 | probably define and better understand what endurance is because as far as I'm concerned, |
2:22.9 | it's something that I work on quite a lot. And sometimes I feel like it's good. And then |
