Summary

Limb fractures are a common injury following blunt trauma in dogs and cats and a rational approach to the management of these patients is crucial. In this episode I discuss this problem with Elvin Kulendra who is a Lecturer in Small Animal Surgery at the QMHA and spends most of his time nowadays doing orthopaedics. Some of the things we talk about include how easy it is to detect a fracture, when is the best time to manipulate a fracture, open versus closed fractures, tips on radiography and the rational use of antimicrobials.

So today I thought we would discuss a general approach to blunt traumatic limb fractures in dogs and cats.

0:36.2

And I'm hoping to provide the listeners with an overview of how to approach these cases

0:39.7

and then also to expand a little on a couple of issues of interest that we can discuss.

0:45.8

Before we get into the gist of the podcast, I obviously have to start off with my emergency

0:50.1

and critical care hat on by reminding the listeners about how we should go about

0:54.0

approaching a blunt trauma patient.

0:56.2

So in other words, start by focusing on assessing the major body systems and prioritising

1:01.0

life-saving interventions and analgesia.

1:04.2

And we will most definitely be coming back to these concepts in a future podcast.

1:09.0

But for the purpose of this podcast, Alvin, let's assume that our patient is

1:11.8

stable in other respects. Okay. Now this probably sounds a little bit daft, but then you already

1:17.6

know that about me. I'm daft and I'm proud to be daft. The first thing I wanted to ask you is,

1:23.1

basically, what is going to make us suspect that a limb fracture is present? So in other words,
