| 0:15.0 | Most of us get about twice the recommended amount. |
| 0:18.0 | Where's all that sodium coming from? |
| 0:20.0 | And more importantly, why should you care? |
| 0:22.0 | These answers and more coming up on today's show. Now for today's episode. |
| 0:25.0 | The recommended maximum intake for sodium |
| 0:30.0 | is about 2,400 milligrams a day, |
| 0:32.0 | and that's roughly 1 teaspoon of table salt. |
| 0:35.2 | Now, most Americans end up eating about twice that much, and that upsets the people whose job it is to worry about |
| 0:41.7 | your health. And I'm not to worry about your health. |
| 0:42.6 | And I'm not just talking about your mother and me. |
| 0:44.8 | There are whole government agencies that lay awake at night |
| 0:48.0 | worrying about your sodium intake. |
| 0:50.4 | Their main concern is that eating a lot of salt can raise your blood pressure and that can be quite dangerous. |
| 0:57.0 | Now in all honesty a high sodium diet doesn't lead to high blood pressure in everyone. |
| 1:02.9 | And some people have high blood pressure |
| 1:04.8 | even when they eat a very low sodium diet. |
| 1:07.4 | But public health policy is all about playing the numbers. |
| 1:11.0 | The government figures that if everyone ate less salt fewer people would develop |
| 1:14.9 | high blood pressure, have strokes and die, and that would be a good thing. |
