Summary
In this episode Dr. Rhonda Patrick interviews Dr. Terry Wahls about how she reversed her secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis with a micronutrient-dense diet and Paleo principles. She identified vitamins/minerals and other compounds present in vegetables/fruits that are essential for mitochondrial health, which is critical for brain function.
In this episode, we discuss...Ā
- (00:00)Ā Introduction
- (00:48)Ā Dysfunctional mitochondria contribute to disease developmentĀ
- (04:03)Ā Suboptimal magnesium status is common and possibly dangerousĀ
- (04:50)Ā Green vegetable consumption is key to Dr. Walhs' wellness
- (06:18)Ā The Triage theory explains how low micronutrient intake increases aging-related diseases
- (09:20)Ā Fruits and vegetables are color-coded for the variety of micronutrients needed in our diet
- (10:35)Ā Sulfur, found in garlic, onions, and cruciferous vegetables, is needed for mitochondrial function
- (16:55)Ā Dr. Wahls' protocol of diet, supplements, and exercise improves fatigue in MS

| 0:00.0 | Good morning, Dr. Rhonda Patrick here. We're at HALIOFX 2014 in Austin, Texas. I'm sitting here with Dr. Terry Walsh, |
| 0:08.0 | who you may recognize from her famous TEDx video entitled Minding Your Micahondria, |
| 0:14.0 | where she talked about the importance of obtaining micronutrients from your diet to not only prevent diseases of aging, |
| 0:22.0 | specifically neurodegenerative diseases, and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, |
| 0:28.0 | but also how you can obtain micronutrients to reverse some of these diseases as well. |
| 0:34.0 | And she also has a recent book called The Walls Protocol, which we'll probably talk about in a minute. |
| 0:41.0 | So thank you, Dr. Walsh, Terry, for joining us. |
| 0:45.0 | Oh, thank you. I'm very pleased to be here. |
| 0:47.0 | Yeah, so tell us a little bit about your findings on how important certain micronutrients are for mitochondrial flax. |
| 0:57.0 | How are your mitochondrial function and how that relates to diseases? |
| 1:03.0 | Well, you know, like you, in medical school, I did memorize all sorts of reactions involving micronutrients, |
| 1:08.0 | which most of I forgot. But sadly, you know, we never got taught what we needed to eat to fuel those micronutrients. |
| 1:16.0 | And as they became ill with the progressive MS and was confined to a totally client wheelchair, |
| 1:22.0 | I got motivated to start reading the rats in mouse studies, and started reading about other diseases with shrinking brains. |
| 1:31.0 | And that led to being turned on to mitochondria, and then being turned on to what were the things I could do to help my mitochondria, |
| 1:40.0 | which then led me to Dr. Amesworth, and the interest and passion in micronutrients. |
| 1:46.0 | Right. So mitochondria are so important for so many different cellular processes inside your body. |
| 1:52.0 | I mean, they literally are the energy producing machines, so to speak. |
| 1:57.0 | And I guess something that you found very interesting was that these mitochondria requires certain micronutrients. |
| 2:03.0 | Right. So as I think about it, and I communicate the message, you're going to need the whole family of B vitamins. |
| 2:09.0 | Minerals, magnesium, zinc, sulfur, you need to protect the mitochondria from poisons like arsenic lead mercury. |
| 2:16.0 | And then because mitochondria are really packaged membrane factories, because it's in the membrane where all these reactions happen, |
